Samenvatting

An evaluation of the doctoral thesis of an Indian sociol'st, K. Ishwaran: FAMILY LIFE IN THE NETHERLANDS. The problem stated was: 'Has the Dutch fam in fact changed in its essentials, during the process of soc change through which Dutch society has been passing since the beginning of this cent?' A sample of Leyden U S's was studied. It was concluded that the Dutch fam has not changed in its essentials during the process of soc change from a preindustrial to an industrial society. A similar study was carried out among S's of the Agri'al U at Wageningen. The problem was diff: 'What progress has individualization made in diff kinds of nuclear fam's & to what extent do they differ re functions & structure ?' Diff's were found between Ur & Ru fam's re individualization, structure & functions. In contrast with Ishwaran's conclusion, it was concluded that because the Ur fam developed from the Ru fam, during the process of individualization & urbanization taking place during the 20th cent, it can be stated that the f am underwent important changes during this time.
