Samenvatting

A pilot study conducted in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1961, proposing some tentative conclusions. The meeting house is considered to be a criterion of: (1) the degree of club membership of newcomers, (2) the degree of soc integration, (3) the degree of familiarity with the meeting house. After an initial period of participant-observation in the meeting house, data was collected, taking into account pop changes (due to births, deaths, moving away, etc). The study was conducted over a period of 3 months. F's were esp questioned, as well as local leaders. All were blue-collar workers. The uncertainty of their jobs implied an irregular mode of existence, poverty being 'denied' by a few expensive acquisitions. Diff's in terminology & Ls presented some problems in COMM. It was found that: (A) there was a high % of club membership, (B) there was some measure of soc integration, (C) there was little or no familiarity with the meeting house. Children had more contact than their parents. While at present the meeting house seems to function only incidentally as a means of integration, it could, in the future, play a more active role.
