Samenvatting
Observations from a European point of view on the org & method of teaching pol'1 sci (PSC) in US, mentioning the wellestablished position of the PSC dept's, the high degree of specialization within these dept's, the heavy stress on sci'fic methodology, & the absence of fixed requirements re basic educ in the soc sci's (students are admitted for graduate study in PSC who have never taken courses in sociol, while in Amsterdam, the study of PSC includes obligatory courses in sociol, econ's, history, & law.) Comparing the US & the Dutch systems it is concluded that the US student gets far more extensive instruction in PSC proper, & enjoys a large freedom to choose courses corresponding to his tastes & abilities, but on the other hand this freedom of choice, the absence of requirements, & the short duration of the separate courses, prevent US professors from building in each phase of instruction on what their students have learnt in earlier phases of their study.
