Samenvatting

A discussion of 3 books on France: (1) on conspiracies by J. R. Tournoux, L'HISTOIRE SECRETE (The Secret History, Plon, 1962); (2) on access to diff kinds of power by M. Drancourt, LES CLES DU POUVOIR (The Keys to Power, Fayard, 1964); & (3) on the history of the pol'al right wing by R. Remond, LA DROIT EN FRANCE (The Right Wing in France, Aubier, 1963). Using these books & briefly citing other relevant literature, an attempt is made at a socio-psychol'al analysis of French soc & pol'al character in terms of authoritarian vs democratic. It is concluded that French nat'l character, in conjunction with French soc structure, is still highly authoritarian. The analysis also demonstrates: (1) That nat'l character analysis is perfectly feasible at the present stage of development of the fields of sociol & psychol, & that an abundance of material is available. (2) That this type of analysis is necessary to an understanding of the changes in European integration. (3) Along with other types of res, this kind of analysis can constitute the discipline of 'European sociol,' a field which is virtually nonexistent at the present time. Modified AA.
