An examination of the theoretical aspects of indices, a discipline shared by sociol & philosophy of knowledge. E. V. W. Vercruysse attempted to combine both these points of view; but the result is 'very disappointing.' The theory of P. Lazarsfeld's approach is considered 'nothing more than an analysis of the practice of indexing, with the logical problems remaining unsolved.' It is concluded that insufficient attention has been paid to theorizing on indices. I. Langnas.
