Samenvatting

The hypothesis of the Ru/Ur continuum, in sociol was an attempt at joining the process of soc change & soc structure to spatial dimensions. An attempt was made to discover a flowing transition between town & country by r'ing the size of settlements with soc characteristics moving along the continuum as dependent or independent variables. But the hypothesis cannot be made operational & there is no question of a movement of interdependent, variables along a continuum. The relation between town & country is rendered too static & the hypothesis must be looked upon as a form of geographical determinism. The typical characteristic of Ur'ism is that it cannot be geographic-hierarchically localized. Thus the hyp cannot be a starting-point for any further discussion. Along both methodological-theoretical & empirical lines, the shortcomings of this approach have been demonstrated. AA.
