Samenvatting

A survey of soc sci res about & in Indonesia, based upon an examination of the relevant literature. Dutch studies of Indonesia failed to recover the prewar level; most of the work done is a continuation of studies initiated before 1941. The main reason is that Indonesia, after it obtained its independence, ceased to be of special interest to the Dutch, & Indonesian studies became a mere part of 'nonWestern sociol.' To compensate for this, a new interest in Indonesia arose in the US (at the U's of Cornell, Yale, California & the Massachusetts Instit of Technology) & Australia (Australian Nat'l U, & U's of Sydney, Monash, & Queensland). The chief interest of the Indonesian programs of these U's is SE. 1 to 3 yrs' field work is considered a sufficient foundation; this has been criticized by Dutch sociol'ts. However, this inadequacy is compensated for by strict adherence to deductive-quantitative methods & by an emphasis on soc processes rather than static underlying forces. Indonesian soc sci'ts have found it difficult to engage in independent work. The first generation of holders of soc sci chairs at Indonesian U's were trained before the war. A 2nd generation, US trained, began to take over in 1956-60. It has a more pragmatic & practical outlook, but its teaching load leaves it little time for res. Moreover, the present deep-going structural reorg of Indonesian U's burdens it with additional org'al & admin'ive duties. The best hope for an Indonesian soc sci ('Indology') lies in a combination of foreign methods with the contribution from participation in the nat'l cultural heritage. The present conditions are not unfavorable to such a development. A 250-item Biblioa. I. Lanenas.
