Samenvatting

Due to unusual pol'al circumstances, the city of Amsterdam went without a mayor for a short period in Spr 1967. An investigation was made into the public's general expectations for the mayoral office, based upon interviews with a representative sample (N=324) of voters of Amsterdam. The res focused on 2 questions: (a) Do the R's' expectations manifest one or more distinct patterns? If so, what are the dimensions of these patterns? (b) May these diff patterns of expectation (role profiles) be explained by relating them to major soc variables (eg, sex, age, pol'al party)? A number of single sentence items, with closed response formulas, were chosen. These reflected diff types of imaginable personal attributes or elements of behavior which could be associated with this office. It was expected that these items would group together to form a limited number of role profiles. The method used to analyze the data was factor analysis (+ Varimax rotation). Major findings include: (1) The patterns revealed were more heterogeneous than was expected. Only a few clusters were found & these explained only a small portion of the total variation. (2) Most background variables were not signif'ly related to these patterns. (3) Role clusters were composed more frequently of expectations for personal attributes than expectations for behavior. A possible explanation for this result could be that the role was vacant; this would make specific patterns of behavior difficult to visualize. (4) The patterns that the res'ers had expected were probably related to more permanent attributes of the mayoral role, whereas the responses seemed to indicate a more situational orientation. AA.
