MODEL, COSMOS RE HISTORY

Samenvatting

Instit's can be conceived of as frozen products of the past (tradition). Sociol, as the study of soc instit's, therefore, very easily ends up in conceptual reification & a society-model that looks like the cosmos-concept of antiquity or the Middle Ages. This cosmos-model is opposed to the post-medieval intellectual trend of explaining reality in terms of processes, developments & changes. This trend is at the same time expressed by a world view which is conditioned by historical awareness & has its roots not in ancient greece but in ancient israel (prophetic tradition). From this point of view a sociol'al cosmosmodel of society is no longer adequate for a modern intellectual frame of reference & should be replaced by a dynamic model which leaves room for history & changes. The problems of such a model are discussed & a solution is sought in a dialectic theory of soc reality. A dynamic sociol'al theory, therefore, is claimed to be necessary not so much because of rapid soc changes in modern society, but because of the necessity to keep sociol'al theory outside the pre-modern, inadequate frame of reference of a cosmos-model.
