A symposium on A. F. J. Köbben's paper on the plural society presented to the Internat'l Sociol'al Congress of 1966 at Evian. W. F. Wertheim, 'One Society, Plurality of Values and Cultures,' suggests that the concept of 'plural society' is meaningless. (2) H. Hoetink, 'Eight Old Request Theses on Segmented Society,' defines 'segmented society' as a society which lacks both racial & cultural homogeneity. (3) O. D. Van Muizenberg, 'New Weapons in an Old Fight,' presents a schema of plural societies based on the interplay between culture (single culture; culture with subcultures; several cultures) & culture (upper/lower strata; co-ordinate strata). (4) J. D. Speckman, 'Power-, Prestige- and Reference Structure,' applies this schema to Indonesia & its racial groups. (5) A. N. J. den Hollander, 'A Tough Misunderstanding,' suggests that the concept of 'plural society' is not wholly useless; but it must be very carefully defined. (6) A. J. F. Köbben, 'Once Again: The Plural Society,' presents a schema applying 5 pairs of concepts (coordinate & hierarchic; culturally homogeneous & heterogeneous; racially homogeneous & heterogeneous; geographically separate or mixed; with & without competing positions) to South Africa, India, Miss, the Netherlands; Surinam & Nigeria in 2 diagrams, & makes critical remarks on previous contributions.
