Samenvatting

In the Netherlands there exists a rather strong r between the religious composition of an individual's circle of friends & church membership. This cannot be explained entirely by the f of contacts with nonmembers. From an explorative interview survey (closed & multiple-choice questions) of a sample of 104 members of an orthodox calvinistic denomination in a modern suburb (Amsterdam-Osdorp), data were collected which make it possible to hypothesis that some kind of attraction of fellow church members makes for selection of friends. In accordance with the findings in this (select) sample of strongly & less strongly committed church members, specific hyp's can be developed: (1) the stronger the religious commitment of an individual, the stronger the attraction of fellow-church members as friends; (2) if there is any attraction between church members, this is more relevant for more intimate forms of interaction; (3) it is possible to postulate a relation between the intimacy of interaction & the selection of the partner of interaction. In conclusion, it is stated that where there exists any soc attraction between church-members, the more intimate friends of an individual will more often be fellow church members. Modified AA.
