The sociol of religion in general & the sociol of missions in particular have hitherto not paid much attention to the phenomenon of proselytization. This phenomenon is interpreted in sociol'al terms; it is conceived as a form of recruitment. In recruitment usually 2 forms of action are involved: (a) efforts to win outsiders for certain positions within a certain soc system (positional incorporation or enstructuration), & (b) efforts to win outsiders for the acceptance of certain values, norms, ideas, beliefs, etc (cultural incorporation: enculturation &/or acculturation). Accordingly, a distinction is proposed between proselytization in a structural & a cultural sense. AA.
