The concept of anomie has drawn & still continues to draw the attention of sociol'ts of diff fields because of its soc relevance, its practical signif, its theoretical fruitfulness, as a test of methodological position, & finally as a challenge to the historian of sociol & the student of SofK. For these reasons it is felt to be appropriate to return to the original texts in which E. Durkheim discussed the phenomenon & the concept of anomie. In particular, the text concerning anomie in DE LA DIVISION DU TRAVAIL SOCIAL (On the Division of Social Labor, 1893, see SA 0206/B4861) has not received the attention it deserves. This & other Durkheim texts relating to anomie (eg, LA SUICIDE, Suicide) are recapitulated & analyzed. Finally, the importance of the concept of anomie for understanding the sociol of Durkheim is underscored. Modified AA.
