concept of power in student political radicalism

Samenvatting

An attempt is made to gain insight into the ideology of left & right wing political activists. These activist elements comprise a small minority of the student population--the left wing consists of about 2% of this population. 23 S's from the ASVA (A Dutch student organization with a left-oriented political ideology), & 14 S's from the OBAS (a Dutch student organization in protest against the politicizing of the ASVA) provided the sample. A control group included 210 students from the general student population of the U of Amsterdam. When questioned about the differences in society, the left-radicals consistently answered in terms of social inequalities, point to the differences in income, education, & class distinction, & differences in power & independence. The right-radicals & the control group, after mentioning differences of income education, & class distinction, fell back to individual, non-commercial differences. The 3 groups were asked to show which of the following had the most power: trustees, professors, staff members, students, technical-administration, ASVA, or industry. The right-radicals thought the trustees had the most authority, immediately followed by the professors. The left-radicals had a strongly different view, indicating that the trustees had the most authority followed by professors & industries. Staff members, students, technical administrators & ASVA had little to very little power. The control group furnished a curious central point, although their views have much in common with the right-radicals. Comparing the power-deprivation & power-increase for the 3 groups, only with the left-radicals is there a power-inflation; with the control group the total power structure is about even; & the right-radicals have a power-decrease, as with their parents. The right-side does not particularly care for naked power, & the left-side has an ambiguous fascination for it--ambiguous, because they do not condone power in other peoples' hands, but their own allies-in-power are hailed. 2 Tables.
