Samenvatting
One of the most important motives of philosophical activity is man's striving for deliverance from what S. Freud called "burden of reality" (druck der realitat), especially from need, suffering, guilt, & death. The idea arose that man can transfigure himself by means of magic, or later, of philosophical speculation into a divine "self" entirely different from & absolutely superior to empirical reality. But this kind of salvation does not change the misery of earthly human life. For that reason, the idea mentioned above, has been transformed into the doctrine that empirical man can be transfigured by means of revolution into a kind of semidivine, superhuman being, living in a "nonalienated" society.
