theories on role & socialization

Samenvatting

E. Durkheim considered education the method through which man is changed from a biological to a cultural-social creature. T. Parsons continued this thesis with S. Freud's theories & viewed the individual anticipating possible-probable reactions of others in a social situation. Emphasizing role attitudes of individuals, he developed a role-expectation-sanction system. Dennis Wrong questioned the possibility of social order & oversocialized conceptions of man seeking acceptance & status from others. Wrong claimed sociologists approached S. Freud's super-ego concept never separating it from the Freudian Id. The question of active role interpretation, role definitions, role interpretations, & the authenticity of the individual exists in the identity theorem. E. Goffman in ENCOUNTERS, (Indianapolis, Ind, 1966), sees large areas between poles of overattachment & alienation; in both extremes interaction is impossible. J. Habermas ("Theses zur Theorie der Sozialisation" [Thesis on the Theory of Socialization] Vorlesungsmanuskript, [Lecture Notes, 1968), views socialization as a system with self-regulatory mechanism; the differences between role norms & behaviors determine role conformity; roles are directed by rules. The Habermas & Goffman concepts enable sociologists to include system coercion & individual autonomy in 1 concept. D. Ridgway.
