review of literature on student activism in the Netherlands & US

Samenvatting

The causes & reactions to student protest are found in value conflict. As discrepancies increase between home-centered values & U-centered values, evidence of a strongly oppositional student culture rises. US activists generally come from a higher, intellectual & the Dutch from a lower, labor class. US activists are politically involved in "Students for a Democratic Society" & "Young Democrats" & come from nonreligious or Jewish families rather than Protestant & Catholic backgrounds. In Holland, the left & right activists are overrepresented in religious groups. US & Dutch students view the U as impersonal & feel alienated & dissatisfied. The accent on structural factors of U's & cultural backgrounds of the students helps interpret student unrest & activism on campus. D. Ridgway.
