Cluster analysis is defined as the search for a classification. The objects to be classified may be Rs as well as objects, psychological properties, etc. The analysis may be applied to fields as varied as psychiatry, education, political science, or biology. A number of methods of cluster analysis are described. The notion of an algorithm is discussed with respect to stepwise multiple regression, which is characterized as a purely heuristic method. The dangers of any stepwise optimalization are stressed. Examples of cluster analysis are given. A method of evaluation of a given classification is provided. There is also a survey of literature as well as of existing computer programs for cluster analysis. A. Orianne.
