Samenvatting

Two specific questions are investigated: (1) How well do Muluccan children perform in the present school system compared to Dutch children? (2) Which factors are influencing the educational problems of Moluccan children? A brief survey of the relationship between the Netherlands & the Molucca Islands is given. The position of the Moluccan family in the Netherlands is considered with respect to rights, habitation, & job market. The position of the young Moluccan generation is treated separately. The increasing aggressiveness of Moluccan youth is noted & is attributed to frustrations, adaptation problems, unemployment, & a traditional tolerance for aggression in young Ms. A survey was conducted among 59 Moluccan schoolchildren (23 Ms) & 35 Dutch children (16 Ms). All belonged to Lc families. Their school results were compared. Muluccan girls were found to perform almost as well as Dutch boys especially in languages. Moluccan boys receive the lowest overall scores & the Dutch girls receive the highest. Both Moluccan girls & boys tend to be older than the average for their grade. More individualized teaching & more emphasis on active participation are recommended. 1 Table. A. Orianne.
