A book by J.M.A.M. Janssens (Begeleiding van ouders van geestelijk gehandicapte kinderen [Attitude of Parents of Mentally Retarded Children], Swets en Zeitlinger, 1977) is criticized. It is pointed out that the results that are obtained by means of an elaborate path analysis could have been reached much more simply. Such unnecessary complication is objected to on four rounds: (1) it renders a text unnecessarily long, (2) it builds a smoke screen around the utility of the results, (3) it capitalizes on accidents, & (4) it favors the replacement of thought by computer programs.
