Samenvatting

Progress based on scientific developments has been the dominant political ideology since the eighteenth century. It is central to both the liberal & the Marxist tradition. Today's welfare state is the final accomplishment of the eighteenth century's dream of the greatest happiness for the greatest number. People, however, are increasingly dissatisfied with their lives. This dissatisfaction can no longer be alleviated by "more of the same" remedies (more education, medicine, appliances, etc). A conservative viewpoint is advocated, but it is noted that it is nearly impossible to define what constitutes conservatism. Conservatism is not opposed to science, but rejects a formal & artificial social order. Scientific truth is not absolute truth, & true scientific attitude requires constant open discussion of social issues. A. Orianne
