Samenvatting

The empirical & heuristic value of the concept of dualism is examined in relation to underdeveloped societies. A survey of the literature is made & a number of different interpretations of the concept are presented. The concept originated in the works of J. H. Boeke. The controversy between Boeke & J. van Gelderen on the cause of dualism (colonialism vs capitalism) is presented. Other critics of Boeke are also considered. A distinction must be made between dualism in the colonial & in the neocolonial period. Within the neocolonial framework, dualism may be analyzed primarily in social & cultural terms or in economic & technological terms. Dualism can only be understood on the basis of a historical analysis, starting with the colonial period. Hence, any explanation of dualism, merely in terms of internal or external power structure, is insufficient. A. Orianne.
