Samenvatting

Rs' tendency to give socially desirable answers influences research data validity. This tendency can be tentatively quantified with social desirability items. The validity of these items is investigated. Analyzed are answers given by 14- to 15-year-olds (N =590) & their mothers (N =530) to questions regarding the children's dental health behavior. The aim was to find a connection between inconsistent answer patterns & social desirability items responses. Five questions were investigated to find whether those who gave more desirable answers also scored higher on a three-item desirability scale. The expected connection was found for 4 children & 1 mother. The total score of inconsistent answers to 5 dental health behavior questions was calculated & compared to the social desirability scale. Children who scored high on the desirability scale also gave more socially desirable answers to questions concerning their health behavior. No such correlation was found among mothers. 9 Tables.
