Examined is the 1978 book issue of Mens en Maatschappij, edited by J. Peschar & W. Ultee, devoted to social stratification & mobility. Particular attention is paid to Peschar's contribution in the issue's introduction & in 'L'Histoire se repete? Betreft een overzicht van recent buitenlands onderzoek' (History Repeats Itself? An Overview of Recent Foreign Research). Peschar attempts to determine future trends in stratification research based on a three-phase developmental model of stratification research over the last thirty years. The first phase is examplified by the work of D. Glass (Social Mobility in Britain, London, 1954), & the second by P. Blau & O. Duncan (The American Occupational Structure, New York, 1967). The third phase includes two tendencies: one characterized by advanced methodologies, eg, path analysis & little substance, the other more traditional & more concerned with class relation research.
