Samenvatting

The number of burglaries reported to the police has increased exponentially in the last thirty years. A diachronic analysis of the phenomenon is presented: several possible explanation factors are studied & a model combining their effects developed. Simplifications of the model have been tested for the city of Amsterdam. Among the factors considered are: population size, number of objects, number of burglaries, number of burglaries per burglar, the odds against capture & conviction, & the severity of penalties imposed. 1 Table, 13 Figures.
