Samenvatting
Investigated was if several aspects of unemployment were experienced differently by unemployed & employed youth of low level education. These aspects were perception of unemployment, labor market orientation, social network, normative system, & perceived influence of the social security system on the extent of unemployment. A semiexperimental designed was used: the two research categories were made homogeneous by pair-wise matching for age, sex, occupation, & level of education (number of cases = 47 matched pairs of male working youth). Both unemployed & employed youth evaluated unemployment negatively. As an advantage of unemployment, the extra amount of leisure time was mentioned by both groups. In comparing this with other research results it was concluded that it is not level of education but age which influences the mentioning of this advantage. Regarding the negative aspects of unemployment, the two samples showed a remarkable difference: 79% of the employed youth saw uselessness as an important disadvantage; however, only 39% of the unemployed felt useless. 3 Tables, Appendix.
