Samenvatting

The hypothesis that membership in professional organizations & reading professional journals would be positively related to perceived professionalism was investigated as part of a 1977 survey in 6 general hospitals in the Netherlands. Respondents were 48 physicians & 442 nurses & student nurses. Professionalism was measured using R. Hall's translation scale based on a 5-dimensional model of professionalism. Three dimensions could be measured reliably: sense of calling to the field, belief in public service, & autonomy. From data on membership & journals read it is concluded that physicians are more professional than nurses: they are better organized & they read more. In both occupations, rank is an intervening variable. On the perceived measure, physicians are not overall more professional but are significantly more autonomous & less service-oriented. Significant positive correlations are found between membership in professional organizations, number of journals read, & perceived professionalism for physicians but not for nurses. It was found that the more professionally nurses behave, the less they perceive themselves as professionals. 6 Tables. Modified HA.
