Samenvatting

Interviewer variance, that proportion of response variance that is attributable to different interviewers rather than to different respondents, is a source of error in survey research & deserves investigation. A model of secondary analysis on interviewer variance is offered, distinguishing between three types of factors: characteristics of questions, of interviewers, & of respondents. The usefulness of this model was illustrated on a recent research project on the relative impact of living circumstances & personality on feelings of well-being. Secondary analysis was applied to 296 2-hour interviews performed by 13 interviewers. Interviewer behavior or task orientation appears to have unexpected effects. Results have clear implications for the training & selection of interviewers but should be verified in further research. 7 Tables, 1 Figure, Appendix. Modified HA.
