Samenvatting

Presented is a study of the bloom & decline of seventeenth century Dutch landscape painting, yielding the following provisional hypotheses: (1) An institutional discontinuity in artists' social structure, with a period of isolation from dominant upper class cultural patterns, stimulates creativity. A firm integration of the group in its own social stratum is conducive to this phenomenon. (2) In such circumstances, artists may, depending upon their personal experience, create original work, detached from the cliches of the past & from the alien cultural patterns of the upper class.
