Samenvatting

In 'Changeable Variables of a School Career,' J. Dronkers proposes an extended path model with 25 variables divided into nine categories so that variables in any category are supposed to influence variables in only the higher categories. There is supposed to be no causal relation inside any category. The criticism of Donkers is: (1) the complete model could be simplified, several causal paths can be eliminatd thereby setting up the possibility for testing comparisons, & (2) mutual influences inside a causal category have not been considered which might give rise to biased path coefficients. In Een korte reactie op het commentaar van Dessens en Jansen, (A Short Reaction to Dessens's and Jansen's Commentary) J. Dronkers argues that the relative value of the expanded or restricted model depends on the investigation's aims. The reduced model is best if an economical predictive model is desired. The latter is also superior in terms of policy decisions since it indicates more restricted (& sometimes more practicable) interventions. 8 Figures. A. Orianne.
