Samenvatting

To study the nature of objective social isolation & feelings of loneliness, questionnaire data were obtained from a stratified sample of Dutch adults (N = 556) with varying marital status from three different communities. Special attention was given to the Rs' evaluation of their own network of social relationships. The results show that loneliness is significantly related to the absence of a marriage partner. People living alone & parents without partners are usually lonelier than people living with a partner. Other important factors include the degree of intimacy that the Rs found in their most important relationship & the desire for new social contacts. 2 Tables, 15 References. Modified HA
