Samenvatting

Collaboration between political philosophers & social scientists might lead to at least partial resolution of the problem of distributive justice. The question is how the empirical theoretical approach of social science might be applied to the normative problem of distributive justice. J. Rawls's approach (A Theory of Justice, Oxford, 1972) is examined; although his image of the reality of society is found to be too simple, & even distorted, his normative justice theory -- based on the principles of the French Revolution, freedom, equality, & brotherhood -- is developed, & ideas from sociology's exchange theory are introduced that should be of help in addressing the following questions: how people experience distributive justice in their daily lives; whether they find the situation fair or unfair; & how they behave in view of their feelings.
