Samenvatting

A reanalysis of a research project undertaken by Frank Bovenkerk (Omdat zij anders zijn [Because They Are Different], Meppel: Boom, 1978) to determine if the treatment in the Dutch press of two groups of foreign minorities, Turks & Moroccans, & Surinamese, differed from that of native Dutch when reporting crimes. Bovenkerk's data analysis in particular is evaluated, & it is concluded that a blanket statement for the Dutch press as a whole is inaccurate; each newspaper must be examined separately. Three questions formulated by Bovenkerk were investigated in detail: (1) whether crimes involving the minority groups received greater prominence in the newspapers; (2) whether country of origin of a foreign offender was more often made conspicuous; & (3) whether crimes involving the foreign minority groups were played up more heavily than those involving native Dutch. Analysis revealed that 3 of the 6 newspapers examined were treating the minorities unfairly; 1 newspaper was consistently more fair than the others on all 3 points. Some methodological points are raised with respect to homogenizing marginals of contingency tables, exact treatment of Pearson's X2 test, & collapsing of categories & variables in contingency table analysis. 8 Tables, 1 Figure. AA.
