Samenvatting

A discussion of George Duby's Les Trois Ordres ou l'imaginaire du feodalisme ([The Three Orders or the Visionary of Feudalism] Paris, 1978). The ideology of the three orders (nobility, clergy, & third order), widely known during the ancien regime, was formed roughly speaking during the period 1000-1200. The development of form & content of this notion depended, according to Duby, totally on the societal developments of the period; Duby's approach denies any major independent explanatory significance to the ways individuals perceive, interpret, & respond to social conditions. A comparison with Marc Bloch's conception is made; it is suggested that Durkheim & the Annee sociologique served as a common background, & that Duby's book is a typical French product. Modified AA.
