Samenvatting

Most previous studies of children's adaptation to their local environments have concentrated on objective factors, eg, available play area, proximity to good schools, & chances for contact with other children; few researchers have interviewed the children themselves to determine their subjective assessments. Questionnaire data obtained from youngsters in Toronto, Ontario (N = 148, aged 14-17) regarding satisfaction with their neighborhoods (400-meter radius of their homes) revealed distinct differences between inner-city & suburban residents, the latter giving more positive appraisals. It is emphasized that adolescent & adult assessments of the same area might differ considerably. 7 Tables, 52 References. M. Meeks.
