Samenvatting

An attempt is made to show that psychophysical scaling techniques can be used for the scaling of occupational status, & that this technique has important advantages compared to other procedures, eg, the high level of measurement obtained, & the possibility to test the validity & to estimate the reliability of measurements. Another advantage is the possibility to test whether there is consensus in the sample, which should be standard routine. The scaling results for occupation status (a social science variable) are compared with those for a physical stimulus (size of numbers), showing that valid measurements are obtained in both cases, & that the reliabilities are high for most Rs (N not given) for both kinds of stimuli. Thus, this technique can be used for scaling social science variables as well as physical variables. Knowledge about these features obtained from psychophysics is useful for the social sciences. 5 Tables, 3 Figures, 36 References. Modified HA.
