Samenvatting
Questionnaire data from out- & inpatients (N = 1,808) of Dutch general hospitals were analyzed to test the validity of using J. B. Rotter's locus of control scale ("Some Problems and Misconceptions Related to the Construct of Internal Versus External Control Reinforcement," Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology, 1975, 43, 56-57) to measure the satisfaction, medical & hospital knowledge, & emotional welfare of patients. Two measures of powerlessness were used: health anomie & medical skepticism. Powerless patients showed more anxiety & stress, & expressed less positive & more negative feelings. Personal health powerlessness correlated negatively with the amount of patients' knowledge, while medical skepticism was positively correlated with level of satisfaction. Rotter's locus of control scale was not found to be suitable as a predictor of patients' situational well-being. 3 Tables, 47 References. Modified HA.
