Samenvatting

A comparison of two generations of pupils in Groningen, Netherlands, using a statistical model that includes the extended variables of occupational level of father, educational level of both parents, sex, & family size. These variables are related to nonpromotion, ability test scores, & advice of teacher. The model is tested with LISREL procedures. The following are found: a diminishing effect of sex on ability score, a decrease of the effect of ability score on teacher's advice, & an increase of the effect of sex on advice. This might be due to the fact that Groningen teachers evaluate the scholastic ability of girls as being lower than that of the boys despite their increasingly equal ability test scores. The total effects of the social background variables on educational attainment have not changed between 1959 & 1977. 3 Tables, 2 Figures, 12 References. Modified AA.
