Gepubliceerde zelfmoorden en verhoging van sterfte door zelfmoord en ongelukken in Nederland 1972-1980

Samenvatting

To investigate the relationship between newspaper suicide coverage & mortality due to suicide & accidents, a partial replication is presented of the analyses by D. P. Phillips (see SA 23:1/75H1402 & SA 27:5/79K2733), using Dutch data from 1972 to 1980. Expected mortality rates were constructed by using Phillips's method & by regressing mortality rates on time & dummy variables for monthly effects. The results were inconclusive. For suicide & traffic accidents, mortality rates tend to rise 3%-8% on a monthly basis (about the same amount as Phillips showed), but this is not significant at conventional levels. No rise of mortality was revealed in the "other accidents" category. 2 Tables, 2 Graphs, 1 Appendix, 5 References. Modified HA.
