Samenvatting

A review of US, British, & Dutch sociological literature reveals that women are being increasingly studied in works on social mobility & stratification. Some problems in these studies involve sex-specific occupational titles & the unequal distribution of men & women over various function & income levels. Occupational prestige scales should be changed periodically to account for shifts in social values; the status of an occupation changes when the number of women in the occupation grows. Research on the relationship between educational & occupational levels has revealed that the relative position of the educational level is of greater importance than the absolute level, a finding with policy implications for the improvement of women's social position. 1 Table, 1 Appendix, 50 References.
