Samenvatting

The economic troubles of the Netherlands during the early 1970s were brushed away by many economists as transient problems; however, the steady intensification of these problems into the 1980s brought to light several structural shortcomings of the Dutch welfare state economy. Historical background is presented showing the welfare state's evolution under a confluence of political, economic, & social factors during the more economically prosperous 1950s & 1960s. Current claims that sociologists provided the initial impetus for the creation of the welfare state are incorrect. It remains to be seen how much input sociologists will have in the formation of the post-welfare state. 16 References. M. Meeks
