One result of the introduction of symbolic interaction studies in sociology has been a decrease in the number of studies based on concrete data. To illustrate this point, a content analysis was performed on journal articles (N = 529) from the 1983 issues of Symbolic Interaction & Studies in Symbolic Interaction. About 38% of the articles have an empirical basis; the majority of the articles use empirical data only to confirm general conceptual models already in existence, not to produce new theories. 6 Tables, 55 References.
