An outline of the development of the sociopolitical ideas of Robert Michels (Zur Soziologie des Parteiwesens in der modernen Demokratie [The Sociology of Political Parties in Modern Democracy], Stuttgart, 1925). Michels's theory of oligarchical tendencies in democratic organizations is reconstructed.
