Recent studies of the transition from primary to secondary school stress the central role of scholastic achievement in this process. It is generally claimed that other background factors influencing achievement levels in secondary education are almost totally overshadowed by previous scholastic achievement. To examine the validity of several models correlating secondary school achievement with primary school achievement, school records of Dutch students (N = 1,034) entering high school in 1977 were examined.
