Samenvatting

An analysis of how the socialization values of parents in Groningen, the Netherlands, changed as a function of SES group between 1972 & 1986. Scores on M. L. Kohn's self-direction vs conformity scale (Class and Conformity: A Study in Values, Homewood, 1969) are compared for 1972 & 1986 samples of parents (N = 1,171 & 675, respectively) & reveal a slight shift toward children's self-direction being more valued than conformity. While these results match those of several US studies, they contradict some of the findings of the Dutch Bureau of Social & Cultural Planning for 1983-1986. Reanalysis of the data suggests that this trend toward valuing self-direction can be attributed to rising educational levels. When SES groups are compared separately, there is strong indication of a countertrend toward valuing conformity, though this result is only statistically significant in 50% of the 12 SES groups. 3 Tables, 11 References.
