Research on social distance in the Netherlands is put into the context of theory on social representations, & two aspects of social distance are distinguished: the amount of social distance between the majority & ethnic minorities, & an ethnic hierarchy of minorities in terms of between-group social distance. The meaning of the ethnic hierarchy as a consequence of a social representation of multiethnic Dutch society is explored using data from 1984 & 1986 pilot studies involving high school & U students (N = 595). 3 Tables, 1 Figure, 38 References.
