Theoretical explanations for racial & sexual discrimination in labor markets tend to be divided between those that are based on prejudice & those based on economic rationality. After describing a research method designed to explore the relative importance of different selection criteria for various groups of employers, several hypotheses concerning the importance of sex & race as selection criteria for clerical & sales jobs in the Netherlands are tested. Results indicate that shopkeepers reject persons of color for jobs in which customer contact is important. Public trust organizations & professional personnel officers, on the other hand, demonstrate the least overt discrimination. 2 Tables, 30 References. Modified HA
