Samenvatting

Data from a 1977 national survey of Dutch secondary school students are used to investigate the relationship between growing up in a one-parent family & the school careers of children, with emphasis on F-headed families. Children living in F-headed families were individually matched by sex, age, family size, & SES with children living in two-parent families. Results show a negative effect of the one-parent family on the level of academic achievement. Sex of the child has no effect on this relationship, but children of divorced parents are more at risk than children of widows. Three possible explanations will be compared in further research: income position, labeling & stigma, & parent-child interaction. 7 Tables, 36 References. Modified HA
