Samenvatting

To investigate changes in the ideas of Dutch youths regarding employment, partnership, & family, & how these ideas correlate with social class & lifestyles, interview data collected in 1988 (N = 54 males & 66 females, ages 16-20) are compared with data collected from 60 women who came of age in the 1950s. The results show that today's young women are much more likely to expect to pursue a career than were women of their mothers' generation. The two-phase model, by which women ceased outside employment after the birth of the first child, is not popular with the younger generation. The influence of social class is evidenced by the fact that upper class girls more frequently choose to combine a career with motherhood; for young men, however, life plans agree more with traditional standards, irrespective of social class. 3 Tables, 55 References.
