Samenvatting

An investigation of the impact of an individual's education vs that of spouse's & parents' education, on culture consumption, using Michael E. Sobel's diagonal reference models (see SA 30:3/82M2954). Analysis of data from the Dutch 1977 Life Situation Survey shows that wives, irrespective of duration of marriage, are influenced by their husband's education almost as much as by their own. In the case of young husbands, the wife has a minor influence, but after many years of marriage, the wife's education becomes more important than the husband's. The influence of parents' education is conditional, depending on whether it is more or less extensive than that of the offspring. 7 Tables, 17 References. Modified AA
